Use an Underwater Camera

Underwater cameras are great for taking photos when you are in the pool or ocean. Going underwater makes a completely different shot than taking them above the water. Most underwater cameras are very durable, but you still need to exercise caution in order not to break it or have it leaking. Learning how to use an underwater camera before you dive into the water is very helpful.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • -Underwater Camera
  • -Waterproof Camera Case
  1. Step 1

Determine the type of underwater camera you wish to purchase. There are some cameras that are made to be used underwater, and others that can have a case snapped onto them to make them waterproof. If you do not plan to take many underwater photos, converting your regular camera as needed is a better idea. However, pictures taken with a specifically designed underwater digital camera are likely to come out better.

  2. Step 2

Use the underwater camera when it is bright and sunny outside. Ocean water can be a bit murky, and all water is a bit darker than a regular setting. If the camera has a flash, you can experiment with it, but it is likely to bounce off the water similar to a window, which can make for poor photography.

  3. Step 3

Take the photos as close to the top of the water as possible, and when you are as still as possible. Again, this helps with the lighting for you pictures. Most things in the water are not stationary, but if you can hold the camera still while taking the shot, it will come out better.

  4. Step 4

Attach the underwater camera to yourself. Some cameras come with a wrist strap, but if not, create a way to clip or tie it to your swimsuit. This will prevent you from dropping it or hitting it against anything while swimming.

  5. Step 5

Be aware of the depth recommendations for your underwater digital camera, and be sure not to exceed them. Doing so could damage the equipment, resulting in a loss of your photos and money spend on the camera.

  6. Step 6

Take the photo the same way you would a regular camera. Look through the viewfinder or LCD screen if the underwater camera has one. Focus on your subject and snap the picture.

  7. Step 7

Wear googles if you aren’t used to opening your eyes underwater. You are going to have to be able to see to take a decent picture.

Tips & Warnings
  • -A disposable underwater camera is sometimes preferred in order to keep from damaging your regular camera.
  • -Being within 3 feet from your subject will allow for the best underwater photo.
