How to Learn CAD Design

CAD, or computer-assisted design, is software used to help create designs for three-dimensional objects. CAD is frequently used by engineers in the design of systems, plants, buildings and technical schemes. There are several varieties of CAD software available.

1. Take a course. The best way to learn CAD is to take a course with an experienced instructor. Many colleges and universities, including two-year and community colleges, offer courses in CAD ranging from the introductory to the advanced.

2. Practice on your own. While you are taking a CAD course, do the assigned homework, but don't stop there. Practice creating objects with CAD software and experiment with different factors and elements to get a sense of what it---and you---can do with the right tools and applications.

3. Work with classmates. By working with others, you can learn from one another and brainstorm to use CAD software in original ways or to create original designs.

4. Explore CAD user communities. Join CAD user groups such as CADuser and CADopia (links below) to chat with other designers around the world. Linking with others will give you new ideas as to using CAD as well as tips to make your CAD software run more efficiently.
