If you are suffering from a variety of illnesses or headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath or inability to concentrate, and there doesn't seem to be any real reason for your problems, your condition could be caused by a fungus known as Stachybotrys chartarum. This is a common black fungus that often grows in damp places in your home. S. chartarum is the cause of what has come to be known as "sick home syndrome," a condition in which your home itself is the cause of many of your illnesses and health complaints. Fortunately S. chartarum is easy to treat, although repeated treatments may be necessary in some cases.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put on a breathing mask and inspect your home for Stachybotrys chartarum fungus. This is a black fungus, sometimes shiny in appearance, growing in areas that are currently damp or that may have recently gotten wet, such as through a flood, broken water pipe or even condensation. Look behind loose paneling and wallpaper when possible.

  2. Step 2

Make a note of all areas in which fungus is growing.

  3. Step 3

Fill a spray bottle halfway full with household bleach and fill it the rest of the way with plain water.

  4. Step 4

Spray all fungus areas thoroughly with the bleach/water solution. Wear your breathing mask while spraying. Spray behind wallpaper and paneling where possible. Spray any material that is wet or has been wet or any areas subject to condensation even if no fungus is visible to the eye.

  5. Step 5

In order to prevent new fungus from growing, correct the problem that caused the dampness in the first place.

  6. Step 6

Recheck the entire house two weeks after the first spraying and respray any new fungus growth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not spray bleach/water mixture into eyes or breathe fumes for long periods of time. Do not mix bleach with any other cleaners, especially ammonia.
