How to Make Parchment
Originally, parchment paper was made from the skins of animals. The word also refers to the document written on paper made that way. Today, parchment can be made from paper. Paper parchment usually has a distinct color and pattern that is achieved by staining. It mimics the look of old parchment. This is a fun project to do with kids. It's easy and a little bit messy, and kids can create their own treasure maps, scrolls and decrees.
Things You'll Need
- White paper
- Coffee, tea or soy sauce
- Baking sheet
- Hair dryer
- Cotton balls
Instructions

-
1
Tear all four edges off a piece of white paper to give it a ragged look.
-
2
Soak the paper in water, then crumple it into a ball.
-
-
3
Gently undo the crumpled ball and lay the paper on a baking sheet. Let it dry. Use a hair dryer or let the paper air-dry.
-
4
Check that the paper has fine creases. If it doesn't, start over again with a fresh piece of paper. Use less water and crumple the ball up tighter.
-
5
Rub cold, brewed coffee or tea over the paper using a cotton ball after the paper has dried. Use a solution that is equal parts soy sauce and water instead of the coffee or tea if you prefer. Make sure the pigment soaks into the paper.
-
6
Let the paper dry.

Tips & Warnings
An alternative method is to stain the paper without wetting and drying it first. Use onionskin paper for a finer parchment. Experiment with different colors of paper. The tighter the crumple, the more creases there will be.
