Tackling the repairs on your teak wood swim deck can either be one of the first projects you undertake in your boat's "fitting out" or one of the very last. It involves the simple replacement of damaged planks--replacement, because it's a deck surface, and should be in good order. If you have any painting to be done, that would be the ideal time for any brightwork repairs or varnishing, since the teak oil would be drying while the paint is drying.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Teak Plank
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Circular Saw
  • Safety Glasses
  • Metal Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Teak Oil
  • Paint brush
  1. Step 1

Remove the lag bolts that hold the swim deck in place on the stern of the boat. Set the bolts aside to be used when you reattach the swim deck frame to the boat.

  2. Step 2

Remove the broken teak planks from the swim deck by removing the screws that hold them to the platform frame with a screwdriver. Set the screws aside, as you will need them to attach the replacement plank to the swim deck frame.

  3. Step 3

Measure the old plank. Mark the dimensions on the new plank and use the circular saw to cut the new plank to the dimensions of the plank you are replacing. If the broken plank was stained with teak oil, paint the teak oil onto the replacement plank with the paint brush. Allow the replacement plank to dry thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Replace the broken plank with the new plank. Use a screwdriver to attach the replacement plank to the swim deck using the screws removed from the plank you replaced.

  5. Step 5

Using the lag screws which you removed from the swim platform when you removed the platform from the boat, reattach the swim platform to the stern of your boat.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan your major repair activities for one end of the boating season or the other, this repair should be made before, simply because that will allow passengers to use the swim deck this season, rather than waiting until next season.
  • This project involves the use of power tools and the appropriate cautions are urged. This project involves the use of a drying oil. Any rags or brushes used in the coating process should be cleaned immediately with laundry detergent and thoroughly rinsed with clear water.
