How to Install Java 1.6 on Ubuntu

Java 1.6 is also known as Sun Java 6. The Java JRE is the run-time environment that allows you to run applications created with the Java language. The JRE needs to be installed to view Java applications over the Internet. The Java JDK, which comes with the Java JRE software, is the software development kit that allows you to develop Java applications both for web pages and as stand-alone applications. To install Java 6 in Ubuntu, you can either use the Synaptic Package Manager or the yum command line tool.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ubuntu
  • Java JDK software development kit
  1. Step 1

    Open the "Synaptic Package Manager" from the "Administration" sub-menu of the "System" menu.

  2. Step 2

    Enter your password when prompted.

  3. Step 3

    Type "java6" in the "Quick Search" box.

  4. Step 4

    Click on "Mark for Installation" next to "sun-java6-jdk."

  5. Step 5

    Click on "Apply" in the main toolbar.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also install the software by typing "sudo yum install sun-java6-jdk" at the command line.
