The Hawaiian sarong is one of the simplest forms of wrap skirt or dress. The wearer can easily go from the beach to a special occasion with the proper method of tying and the right pattern of fabric.
Making your own sarong is simple and quick, and allows you the flexibility of matching the sarong to your swim suit or your favorite evening top.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric, to measure
  • Scissors
  • Sewing kit or sewing machine
  1. Step 1

Measure your waist, or use an existing wrap skirt or sarong to determine how much fabric you will need to wrap your sarong. Note your measurements. Include extra fabric for overlapping, folding and tying.

  2. Step 2

Purchase fabric for your sarong. Ask a salesperson to help you cut the exact measurements. Request extra length if you have doubts; you can always trim the fabric at home. Compare your sarong fabric to the garment you are going to wear it with to be sure your swimsuit or top matches.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the raw fabric around your waist to check for length. Trim the fabric to the desired length.

  4. Step 4

Hem the edges of the raw fabric to avoid fraying. Fold over the unfinished edges into a small hem (one inch or less, as desired) and hand stitch or machine sew the hem in place. Iron the hem flat. Raw edges can also be left.

  5. Step 5

Wrap the sarong around your waist and tie. Experiment with different folds and styles.
