How to Fix a Computer That Starts With the Common File Folder Open

The installation or removal of certain programs on your computer can create an irritating problem when the "Common" folder from the "Program Files" section of your hard drive opens automatically as your computer is booting up. Since this sometimes prevents the other components from opening properly, this can become a major problem on your system. If you have experienced this problem with the "Common" folder, you need to determine what is causing the folder to open automatically on your computer and solve the problem accordingly.

Instructions

    • 1

See if the folder is set up to open on start-up. To check the list of startup files and programs, go to the "Start" menu. Type "msconfig" into the search box and press "Enter". This will bring up the "System Configuration" window. Click on the "Startup" tab. Every program and file that is set to run on start-up will be listed in the window. If you find the "Common" folder in the list, uncheck it and click "OK." More than likely, it won't be that simple.

Go to "My Computer" from the "Start" menu. Open the C:\ drive and double-click on "Program Files" to open the folder.

    • 3

Find any files that are hidden in the "Program Files" folder, if there are any. All of the files might be showing, or you might see a message that there are hidden files in the directory. If you get this message, there will also be a link to display the files. Click the link and you will be taken to a screen with the hidden folders. The "Common" folder will likely be with these folders. Double-click the folder to open it and check what is inside. If there is anything, it should be only leftover files from a bad uninstall. If the files are named "help.dll" and "help.src," you can safely delete them.

Close the "Common" folder. Drag the entire folder to the Recycle Bin. Empty the contents of the Recycle Bin to remove the folder completely from your system.

    • 5

Restart the computer. Your booting process should be back to normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • There will also be a folder in the "Program Files" folder called "Common Files." Do not delete this file. You will not fix your problem and will delete files that are necessary to the proper running of your system.
