The wastebasket, or Recycle Bin as it is often known in Windows, usually appears on the desktop. Occasionally, a computer user will accidentally delete this from the desktop when they right-click on the icon and select Delete, thinking this will empty the Recycle Bin when it actually deletes it. They are then unable to quickly drag-and-drop other items from the desktop there, or easily restore items that have been accidentally deleted. Windows Vista has a simple method for restoring the wastebasket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Windows desktop and click Start.

  2. Step 2

Select Control Panel from the list of options. Click Appearance and Personalization.

  3. Step 3

Choose Change Desktop Icons, then click on the box next to the Recycle Bin. Click OK. The wastebasket icon will reappear on your desktop.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the icon is not refreshing properly after this procedure, go into the Change Desktop Icons pane and change the icon to the full Recycle Bin. Save the change, then change the icon to an empty Recycle Bin and save the change again.
