Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is a technology that allows users to connect to a private network from outside that network. VPN technology is included in Microsoft server software, so it can be used on your Windows server to gain remote access. Installing, managing and configuring Microsoft VPN is done through the administrative tools.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Server 2000 or 2003
  1. Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." Select "Administrative Tools" and choose "Routing and Remote Access."

  2. Step 2

Click the name of the server you want to configure and select "Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access." Click "Next."

  3. Step 3

Select "Virtual private network (VPN server)" and click the "Next" button.

  4. Step 4

Ensure that the TCP/IP selection is made in the next window, and select "Yes, all of the available protocols are on this list." Click the "Next" button.

  5. Step 5

Select the Internet connection that is used to establish connectivity. This can be any one of the configured connections in the "Networking" section of the control panel.

  6. Step 6

Select the option that says "Automatically" assign for IP addresses. This enables the server to give IP addresses without needing to configure remote computers individually with static IP addresses.

  7. Step 7

Select "No, I don't want to set up this server to use RADIUS now." This window asks if you would like to configure multiple servers, but for this example, there is only one server to configure. Click the "Next" button and then "Finish." This brings you back to the "Routing and Remote Access" console.

  8. Step 8

Right-click the "Ports" icon and select "Properties."

  9. Step 9

Select the "WAN Miniport (PPTP) device" installed on the server and click the "Configure" button.

  10. Step 10

Enter the maximum number of remote port connections and click "OK." At this point, VPN services are installed and enabled on your server.
