How to Make Baby Shower Banners

Save

When you are throwing a baby shower for a friend or relative, one decorative item sure to please is a large, well-made banner wishing the guest of honor all the best in the future. If you would like to create a big baby shower banner for your party, all you need is a good graphics program, such as Photoshop, and some free downloaded clip art.

  • Download "baby" imagery, such as babies, storks, cribs and rattles, from a free clip art website. In Photoshop, select "File," then click "New." Set the height at 12 inches, the width at 60 inches and the resolution at 300 pixels/inch. This will create a very large file, so close any other open programs while working on this project.

  • Change the "Background" and "Foreground" colors (at the bottom of the toolbar on the left) to two you would like to use in the banner (pink and blue would be appropriate). Then select the "Gradient" tool from the toolbar (right-click the paint bucket), and drag a gradient across the banner.

  • Open the clip art images you downloaded. Select "Image" from the menu, and click "Image Size." In the dialog box that opens, make sure "Bicubic Smoother" is selected, and increase the resolution to 300. Choose "Constrain Proportions" (which will force any change made to one parameter to be applied to the other), and increase the height to 8 or 10 inches. Click "OK." If the clip art came with a background color, use the "Magic Wand" tool to select and delete it. Select "Selection," and click "Inverse." Select "Edit," and click "Copy." Go back to the banner image, and "Paste" the clip art in, using the "Move" tool to position it where you like.

  • Select the "Text" tool, and type your message. Choose a font that looks nice, such as Edwardian Script. Increase the font size to 300 or 400, depending on what you want the banner to say.

  • Save your work as a PSD file, then resave your work as a high-resolution JPEG, and burn it to a CD. Take the CD to a printer that can do banners, such as Staples or Office Depot, and have the banner printed.
