How to Check System Components

If you are considering a new software purchase, it is wise to first check your system components to ensure that your computer meets the hardware requirements for the program. Both the Windows and Mac operating systems allow users to check their system components and view the status of each piece of hardware.

  1. PC Instructions

      Open the Start menu by clicking on the icon in the lower left corner.

      Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and choose the "Properties" option.

      Go to the "Hardware" tab at the top of the properties window.

      Click on the "Device Manager" button to launch the utility program that lists all system components.

      Expand one of the hardware categories to view all associated system components, and then double-click on an individual item to view more information and check the status for that component.

    Mac Instructions

      Click on the apple symbol in the upper-left corner of the screen and select "About This Mac."

      Click on the "More Info" button in the middle of the pop-up window to launch the System Profiler application, which lists all of your system components.
