How to Configure a uTorrent Port
uTorrent is a client for peer-to-peer file sharing over torrent trackers. If you are using a router to share an Internet connection, you must configure a port before use. This adds an extra layer of security to your Internet connection and computer as you share files with other torrent peers. Without a properly configured port, you will experience slow or nonexistent file transfer speeds. Port configuration is not necessary if your computer is directly connected to the Internet.

Enter the desired port number. Open uTorrent. Click on "Options," then "Preferences" and select "Connection." Enter a new port number or click on "Random port."

2
Add the port to your router's DMZ. If you do not have the manual for your router, PortForward.com offers step-by-step instructions for nearly all makes and models (see link in Resources below). Find your router in the list and follow the instructions provided.

Test the port. In uTorrent, click on "Options" and then "Speed Guide." At the bottom of the window, click on the button to test the port forwarding. This will open a new browser, which will tell you the result of the forwarding test. If it is not forwarded properly, refer to the router-specific instructions used in Step 2.

In Windows Vista, you may need to unblock uTorrent during your first download. A dialog box will prompt you to do this, but may not be available if you are not logged into an account with Administrator privileges.
