How to Replace the Drag in a Penn Reel

The drag system in your Penn Reel lets you "put the brakes" on fish without breaking your line. The smooth operation of your drag increases the odds of landing that trophy fish, while a drag system that sticks and hesitates will result in lost fish and broken lines. Replacing the drag washers annually is easy to do and will ensure the continued smooth operation of your Penn reel for the next fishing season.

    • 3

Wipe off any grease or grime from the steel washers.

    • 4

Discard the old carbon fiber washers and replace with new washers. Be sure to replace them in the order they were removed.

    • 5

Reinsert the retaining ring by holding one end in its groove with your finger and using the screwdriver to snap the other end into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • The retaining ring will spring out of place when you pry it from its groove. Cover the spool with your hand to prevent the ring from falling on the floor and getting lost. Go to the service department at http://www.pennreels.com to locate the correct drag washers for your Penn Reel.

  • Grease is the enemy of all drag systems. Your Penn Reel is made to operate with the carbon washers dry. Never use lubricants in your drag system. Before reassembling your drag, examine the three metal washers and to make sure they are smooth and free of any burrs or unusual wear.
