Step 1
SONY is about to hit the street with a new laptop via their VAIO line of computers that will be small, cheap with stipped-down components called a Mini-PC "netbook."
It'll cost about 60,000 yen (made in Japan, remember) but since I speak Japanese, that translates to about $630 bucks. -
Step 2
Netbooks are tiny computers with a low profit margin, but work well in terms of sales with budget-minded manufacturers. The VAIO is about the size of a hardbook and runs on lower grade hardware than other SONY models. So, go get one of your hardbooks and a ruler. I'll wait. Does
9 1/2 by 6 1/2 sound about right? I thought so. This new netbook will measure ten inches by seven inches and is one inch thick. The screens will have a resolution of 1366 by 768 - higher than in other netbooks available. They will come in white, black and pink for the ladies with matching mouse and case. Cool, huh! -
Step 3
Dell comes close with a 12 inch VOSTRO 1220 that is lightweight with a ton of new features, but is priced at $799.
One of the "heavy-hitters" in the PC business is APPLE. CEO Steve Jobs says his company doesn't know how to build such a computer (netbook) that's not a piece of crap, so for the time being....he's taking a pass.
Thanks for your input and choice of words, Steve.
