Hiccups can be annoying and very uncomfortable. To some people they may not happen that often, while others may get hiccups all of the time. Either way, hiccups prove to be just as irritating and everyone wants to get rid of them as fast as possible. Here are a few tips to rid yourself of hiccups.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

For starters try holding your breath for a few seconds. Disrupting your breathing can usually get rid of hiccups and balance yourself out again. Remember not to hold your breath for too long!

  2. Step 2

Drink a whole glass of water in one sitting. This will help rid yourself of hiccups by causing you to hold your breath for a specific amount of time which will change your pattern of breathing. Because hiccups are spasms in your diaphragm, change in breathing does wonders with getting rid of them.

  3. Step 3

Try burping. Burping will get rid of the air trapped in your windpipe.

  4. Step 4

Some people suggest eating a spoonful of peanut butter or sugar to help get rid of hiccups. While it may not work for some people, it has worked for many.

  5. Step 5

Slow down your breathing. Take slow and steady breaths. This will hopefully help control your breathing and take away the annoying hiccups.

  6. Step 6

Breathe into a paper bag. Some people have a hard time controlling their breathing. Use a paper bag as an aid.

  7. Step 7

Sometimes antacids will do the trick. Only take up to two, however.

  8. Step 8

If all else fails, have someone scare you! It's perhaps the oldest trick in the book, but it definitely works if done right. You just have to have someone scare the hiccups right out of you.
