Chenille throws add an attractive and functional addition to any living area in your home. These lightly woven blankets are made of a soft material that wraps you in warmth on a cold night. Caring for a chenille throw isn't quite the same as a regular blanket. The loose weave can cause the throw to unravel quite easily, resulting in a pile of unusable yarn. Cleaning a chenille throw requires gentle spot cleaning and whole cleaning to keep the fabric intact, feeling soft and looking new.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large wash basin, sink or tub Mild fabric detergent Washing machine

    Spot Cleaning

  1. Step 1

Remove spots or stains by applying cool water as soon as possible. Rinse gently under the tap to loosen the stain.

  2. Step 2

Apply a small amount of mild fabric detergent to the fabric and work it gently into the stain with your fingers. Don't scrub at the fabric, as this will cause loosening of the fabric weave.

  3. Step 3

Rinse gently but thoroughly until the water runs clear. Place the throw on a flat surface to dry.

  4. Hand Washing

  5. Step 1

Fill an adequately sized basin with cool water and pour in a few capfuls of mild fabric detergent.

  6. Step 2

Immerse the entire throw into the water and very gently agitate the water. Allow the throw to soak for 30 minutes.

  7. Step 3

Release the water from the tub and rinse the blanket under cool running water. To get water and soap out of the fabric, lightly press the chenille against itself instead of wringing it. Squeeze the fabric between the palms of your hands to help release excess water. Dry flat.

  8. Machine Washing

  9. Step 1

Place the chenille throw alone into the washing machine on a delicate cycle with cool water. This shortened cycle with gentle agitation should clean your throw completely. Some throws will disintegrate in even the gentlest cycles so be aware that you might ruin the throw. All chenille fabric throws off balls of fluff that adhere to everything in the washer.

  10. Step 2

Remove the blanket from the washer and gently pull the fabric back to its original shape. Don't tug too hard when the chenille is wet or you'll invite holes and loops.

  11. Step 3

Lay the throw completely flat to restore the shape of the blanket. Never place a chenille throw in the dryer. Too much agitation will unravel the entire blanket in record time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take the chenille throw to a reputable dry cleaners to avoid damaging the delicate weave of the fabric with liquid
