Saltillo tile is a terra cotta tile that is only made in Mexico. This all-natural flooring offers an alternative to floors made with toxic materials, and it is cost efficient. These tiles are fragile and hard to clean because of they are made of natural clay that has been sun dried. These tiles are kiln-fired for durability but are not very hard or strong, making them best for indoor use. Many people use them in their bathrooms where hair spray can build up on the tiles. Removing hair spray is an easy process and doesn't take many resources.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 2 bowls
  • Hot water
  • Scrubber sponge
  • Rinsing rag or mop
  • Cold water
  • Drying towels or paper towel
  1. Step 1

Add 1 cup of vinegar to a bowl of hot water and allow it to sit for two minutes to dilute properly.

  2. Step 2

Dip the sponge into the water and wring out well. Use the rough/scrubbing side of the damp sponge to rub vigorously on the tiles. Wet the sponge again and wring out, then wipe over the same area with the sponge side to remove any debris or grease. Continue to do this over the entire area.

  3. Step 3

Wet the rinsing rag or mop in cold water and wring out well. Use the damp rag or mop to go over the tiles in the affected area. Repeat the rinsing until vinegar is no longer smelled on the tile. Any vinegar left on the tile will cause staining.

  4. Step 4

Use the drying towels or a paper towel to remove any water left by the mop or rinsing rag. Water left on the tiles will not only stain with water spots, but can cause weakening of the tiles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any tiles that are cleaned normally should be sealed and then resealed after a cleaning job. This not only helps to extend the life of the tiles, but also helps to cut down the amount of deep cleaning needed. No harsh chemicals should ever be used on these tiles, and grout is considered a life-ender for this tile. It is of the utmost importance that any spills or dirt be removed immediately to avoid staining and weakening of the tiles. Mild cleaners can be used on this tile but should always be rinsed and dried after their use. Sealants should be applied before using the floor again (follow the sealant's directions).
