Dog tags are worn by military personnel. Dog tags are so called because of their resemblance to those worn by the family pet. But they are actually meaningful and significant as they are used to identify those in the military, especially those who are wounded or killed in battle. Many of these dog tags are kept by the family of the soldiers who wore them; however, they are still possible to collect if you check some basic sources.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try your local antique shops. Antique shops are great resources for specialty items such as dog tags. And if the shop does not carry them, it does not hurt to talk to the antique shop owner. He will probably be able to offer you area-centered information on where to find dog tags for collection locally. See resources below to find an antique shop in your area.

  2. Step 2

Visit antique auctions. Come with money to spend and a desire to win. You probably will need to bid high on these items as they are so meaningful to the families of the soldier who once worn them.

  3. Step 3

Search your local newspapers or online classifieds for notes of garage sales or estate sales. Local fliers and classifieds are a great resource for collector's items such as dog tags, especially for those being sold by the original owner.

  4. Step 4

Visit local craft markets or traveling craft and antique fairs. You will need to keep abreast of local events to find out in advance when and where these events occur in your area, but they are excellent resources for authentic and specialty-made dog tags.

  5. Step 5

Collector's items online are a rarity, but they are not impossible to find. If you have any questions about a posted item, be sure to question the seller before purchasing it.

  6. Step 6

Consider having your own made and personalized. If the authenticity of a dog tag is not what matters to you, but the look of the dog tags themselves, consider having one specialty made for you through sites like Dog Tags Online. See resources below.
