A typical 'squat style' toilet.
A typical 'squat style' toilet.

When nature calls in a foreign country, opening the door of a bathroom stall only to see a squat toilet can bring dread to most travelers. Learn how to use a squat toilet now before you need to use one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • squat toilet
  • tissues
  • hand sanitizer
  1. Step 1

Secure any loose items in your pockets. You don't want to have to go fishing for keys!

  2. Step 2

Stand with your back to the wall. Place your feet on each of the footpads, on either side of the toilet.

  3. Step 3

Pull down your pants and underwear, but keep a hold of them to prevent them from falling into the toilet. Squat by bending your knees. Try not to use the wall to support your back. Who knows what has splashed on it? Try to position your 'exit' over the center of the toilet and go.

  4. Step 4

Either use the sprayer to clean yourself or use toilet paper. When you are finished throw the toilet paper in the bin provided. Plumbing in third world countries is not the best and just can't handle TP.

  5. Step 5

Get dressed and flush, either with the handle (use your foot) or more commonly by pouring water into the toilet. Check your pants for splashes and (urgh) stains, then wash your hands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always carry tissues when you are out and about in developing nations.
  • Try to use a hand sanitizer even if they provide soap.
  • Sometimes public restaurants require a small fee. As a foreigner, you most likely will not have any hassles if you don't pay but you should.
