Rust forms on meat grinder discs that have not been stored properly. Because the discs are metal, rust is likely to form when the discs are stored without being coated in mineral or cooking oil after washing. But it's easy to remove rust
with a few tools some effort on your part.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dremel tool with wire brush bit
  • Steel wool, or small stiff metal brush
  • Pipe cleaners
  1. Step 1

Wash the meat grinder disc in soap and warm water to remove any rust that will flake off easily. Dry the disc thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Use a Dremel tool--or any similar rotary tool with a wire brush attachment--to remove surface rust from the disc. Be careful not to brush too vigorously as this can thin the metal part. Remove only the rust; when you see bare metal, stop brushing that area. Wash and dry the disc.

  3. Step 3

Scrub the disc with steel wool or a small stiff metal brush to remove any rust that can be reached inside the holes and the blades of the grinding disc.

  4. Step 4

Use stiff pipe cleaners to remove the rust from the smaller holes of the disc that the steel wool or brush cannot reach.

  5. Step 5

Wash and dry the disc a final time to remove any rust particles that remain on the disc. Use the disc immediately or coat in mineral or cooking oil to store for later use.

Tips & Warnings
  • When coated with mineral or cooking oil, the discs are ready to use when needed without further washing. Store coated meat grinder discs in a sealed plastic bag to prevent dust from collecting in the oil. Running a few slices of stale bread through your meat grinder after use will help remove any meat remaining in the holes of the disc, making it easier to clean.
