Rummage Sale...Garage Sale...Yard Sale...
No matter what you call it - it means selling your junk or buying someone else' junk. And, if you do it right it's possible to have a "traffic-jam" in front of your house on any given Saturday or Sunday or both. What the irresistible appeal to somebodys stuff is beyond me. But it's a great way to make enough money to pay the rent or car payment for a month.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Somewhere someone is "suckering" total strangers to cart-off trash that has been stacked up in a garage for years. As long as people have owned things, from time-to-time, they have the need to get rid of them.
Have your own garage/yard sale; work together with a neighbor for a "dual sale" or solicit the entire block to have the sale at the same time which I know works like a charm, because I've tried it.

  2. Step 2

So, to avoid Forest Gump's logic, (stupid is as stupid does) you need to choose a date for the sale. Do NOT have yours on a Holiday weekend and if you live where there is a homeowners association, you might need their permission.
Next, get the word out. Maybe a small AD in the weekend paper. Tack up signs on telephone poles with address and arrows. List a few popular items. Post on Craig's List and garagesalessource.com

  3. Step 3

Price accordingly. A good rule of thumb is good condition 25% to 30% of retail value. Bundle items when possible. A rubber band around 3 books is a good idea. Oh, one more thing. Not every item is good for a yard sale. Big-ticket stuff like pricey furniture, TV's may sell and generate money, but not often unless priced at rock-bottom

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared to NEGOTIATE. ALL shoppers will expect a DEAL!
  • As mentioned above, getting neighbors to join in with you and sharing in AD costs and efforts is an idea to consider.
