Things You'll Need:
- Sterile dressings
-
Step 1
Stay in bed for the first few days after breast surgery. If you are feeling sore when you lift your head up and down, prop your neck and head up with a pillow. Stay as still as possible and lie on your back.
-
Step 2
Change your dressings according to your doctor's specific instructions. You will most likely be required to unwrap your dressings every few days, clean your wounds with soap and water, throw the old dressings away, and apply new dressings firmly but not so tightly as to constrict breathing.
-
Step 3
Take it slow. Breast surgery takes, on average, two to three weeks for recovery. It is not unusual to feel soreness for six weeks or even two months after your surgery, although severe pain should be reported to your doctor.
-
Step 4
Avoid strenuous activities like heavy lifting and exercising. Quick arm movements and bumpy car rides can rip stitches and open wounds.
-
Step 5
See your doctor regularly. It is very important that you keep all of your follow-up appointments after surgery. You will need to get your stitches and, in some cases, a drain removed from your breast area. If you miss these appointments, you risk infection and slower healing time.
