Like most electronics, computers need to be upgraded in order to run the most current software and hardware. This holds true for their operating systems, and the latest upgrade for Microsoft based computers is Vista. There are several versions of Vista, including the Premium edition, which comes accompanied with more applications than the standard version. Other versions of Vista include Business, Enterprise and Ultimate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista Premium installation disk

    The Steps

  1. Step 1

Turn the computer on and let the current operating system load. Insert the installation disk. Wait a moment until the disk launches.

  2. Step 2

Click "Install Now" when the installation screen appears.

  3. Step 3

Click "Upgrade" when asked what kind of installation you would like.

  4. Step 4

Click "Next Step." Vista will now scan the computer to determine the current operating system.

  5. Step 5

Follow the remaining prompts and Vista will complete its installation and then restart.

Tips & Warnings
  • When upgrading from XP to Vista, Windows will simply "upgrade" the software and not completely reinstall the operating system. Because of this, the upgrade is not as complex as former operating systems, and it is usually not necessary to back up existing files. However, you can save important documents on a separate hard drive or removable disk, just in case Vista removes them.
