How to Do the Scooter Dance

The Scooter Dance is taken from a popular European dance style called Jumpstyle. The dance originated in Belgium in 1997 and involves steps, kicks, jumps and arm swinging. It is usually performed to electronic music.

Instructions

  1. Learn the Basics

    • 1

Stand on both feet and kick your left foot to the back, so you are balanced on your right foot, with your left toe on the ground. Then, from that position, kick your right foot back, so you're balanced on your left foot, with your right toe on the ground.

    • 2

While still balanced on your left foot, kick your right foot twice to the front, like you're stomping on something with your heel. Jump, and switch so you balance on your right foot, and then kick with your left foot.

    • 3

Practice these three steps, and when you have them down, you can add some tricks.

When you are ready to do the dance to music, you can begin by either jumping twice with your feet together, and then going into the basic step, or you can kick one foot out twice, and then begin the basic step.

    Learn Some Tricks

    • 4

The Half Twist: Kick your right foot twice, the same way as before, then put it on the ground. As you do so, turn 90 degrees to your right and kick your left foot into the air. With your foot still in the air, jump and turn another 90 degrees to your right, so you land on your left foot, with your right toe on the ground behind you.

Repeat the sequence, and when your right toe lands on the ground, tap it twice.

After you do the basic step three times, you add in this trick at the point in the basic step where you kick your right foot out twice. It should fit in smoothly.

The Full Twist: This move starts out just like the Half Twist and is basically just two Half Twists together. When your left foot is in the air, instead of just turning 90 degrees to your right, turn a full 180 degrees, and land the same way---on your left foot, with your right toe on the ground behind you. From here, begin the Half Twist again.

    • 6

The Knee Spin: Once again, begin to do a Half Twist by kicking your right foot twice. Put your right foot on the ground, turn to your right, and kick your left foot into the air. Instead of turning again, jump and put your left foot down, and pull your right foot up behind you with your hand. You should be balanced on your left foot, so you can jump and twist 180 degrees while still holding your right foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a hard dance, so don't get frustrated if you can't get it right away. The good news is every step is just a variation off the basic or the half step, so the better you get at those two steps, the easier the harder tricks will be. The video tutorial at the bottom of this page is an excellent resource for learning the dance.

  • Be careful not to injure yourself or someone else when kicking and turning. Practice in a wide open area.
