How to Get a CDL to Drive a Truck
In order to get a commercial driver license (CDL), one must go through additional steps beyond what is required to obtain a regular driver license. Driving a truck or professionally transporting more than 10 people requires a CDL in California. A commercial driver also must be at least 18 years old, or 21 years old if crossing state lines. If hazardous materials are going to be transported, additional steps will need to be taken in order to become qualified to operate.
Things You'll Need
- Social Security number
- Birth certificate
- D-51 Form
- Vehicle to test in, or a DL-140 from an employer
Instructions
-
The CDL Permit
-
1
Take the D-51 medical form (See Reference) to your doctor and have him complete it. This form will need to be present when applying for a learner's permit.
-
2
Pass the written exam to receive an instructional permit to practice driving a commercial vehicle with a commercially licensed person.
-
-
3
Fill out the DL-44 application (available at the DMV) and provide a document such as a birth certificate to prove age and given name.
-
4
The DMV will verify your Social Security number, thumbprint you and take your picture. You also will have to pass a vision test. There also will be an application fee.
-
5
Submit to a background check, which is administered by the Transportation Security Administration. This is needed for hauling hazardous materials.
CDL License
-
6
Practice driving with a CDL driver, or apply at one of the many schools (See Reference) to learn how to operate commercial vehicles.
-
7
Call the DMV to schedule a test date. You must use the vehicle you will be licensed to drive for the test, such as a bus or an 18-wheeler.
-
8
Pass the vehicle examination done by the road test administrator. Pass the driving test, which involves driving and skill testing. If you have a signed DL-140 from an employer, which is a Certification of Driving Skill, you may skip this procedure.

If you pass all the required tests, your permanent license will arrive in the mail within 60 days.
