How to Apply for Subsidized Housing
Subsidized housing are homes that are supported by government funding and are for people who earn low incomes. Types of subsidized housing include rent supplements, public housing, non-profit housing and private sector housing. These subsidies are provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and applying for this type of government aid differs from state to state.

Go to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website at hud.gov. Find your state from the drop-down menu below the "Information by State" heading and click on the "Go" button.

Click on the "Affordable Rentals" option under the "Quick Links" heading. Click on the "Search for a subsidized apartment" option to find subsidized apartments in your area. Be sure to include whether you are looking for disabled, elderly, family or health care type housing. After entering the field criteria, you can look through a list of options and contacts in your area.

Go back to the "Rental Help" page for your state. Click on the option to apply for public housing and housing choice voucher from the Public Housing Agency (PHA). The Housing Choice Voucher Program, also referred to as Section 8 from the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, provides Federal aid to low-income families to live in government subsidized housing.

Decide whether you need to apply for low-rent housing or Section 8. The low-rent option is more for a one-income household with a moderate income. The Section 8 option provides the most aid for your needs depending on your income. You can choose a housing authority that offers a Housing Choice Voucher Program for low-rent, Section 8 or both.

Go to the Housing Authority website for your city. Click on the option for services, and then click on the option for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Read about how they handle applications. Some Housing Authority websites may allow you to apply electronically, or you may have to visit the office in person to apply. When you apply make sure you bring all identification and tax information, proof of income, and family information. You'll be notified of your qualification within 30 days by a letter or call from a representative.
