Things You'll Need:
- Level, tape measure, concrete cleaner, epoxy coating, leveling compound, mixing pan
-
Step 1
Clean the concrete surface and remove all stains from the surface. A clean surface is essential to get the proper bond with the new surface. Measure the are and write down the measurements, you will need to know the size of the area when determining how much product is needed to make the surface smooth.
-
Step 2
Determine how level the surface is, and what kind of shape it is in. A string level works well along with the tape measure to determine he amount of variance, and location of the variance, on the surface. Small variations in the level of the surface are easier to adjust for, large variances require the use of a leveling compound (like a thin mortar) to level the surface and remove the variations. Once you know how level the surface is decide which product to use. A basically level surface in good shape (minor holes, cracks) can be smoothed using an epoxy coating applied just like paint. A surface that is out of level or has large holes and cracks requires the use of leveling compound. Either product is available at most home stores.

Step 3
Apply the desired product to the surface following the instructions that come with the product. Ensure that the surface is swept clean, and is dry before applying the product. Allow the product to dry thoroughly, you should now have a smooth concrete surface!
