Make a Satin Wired-Ribbon Rose

Satin-ribbon roses are elegant pieces of craft work. Satin wired-ribbon roses hold up well with the wire as a support. They can be used for artistic displays, corsages, wreaths and hat adornments. You can make a satin rose with wired ribbon and secure it with floral tape or sewing thread. The satin roses can be made for any season or occasion with the wide variety of sizes and colors of wired ribbon that are available in craft stores, sewing departments and florist supplies.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wired ribbon
  • Floral tape
  • Florist wire
  • Thread and needle
  1. Step 1

Choose wired ribbon in a color that you find appropriate for your craft project. It should be at least one inch wide. Cut a 12-inch long piece from the ribbon. If you plan to secure your rose with thread and needle, cut a 12-inch piece of thread. Thread the needle, double the thread and knot the end. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Place the ribbon on your work surface with the end pointing to the right side. Sharply fold the ribbon downward at an angle about 1/2 inch from the end.

  3. Step 3

Fold the ribbon one more time at an angle toward the left. Begin to turn the ribbon toward the left in a tight little coil. Notice that the angled end of the ribbon is pointing downward.

  4. Step 4

Hold the coiled ribbon and give it another turn toward the left. It should resemble a rosebud.

  5. Step 5

Place a 6-to-10-inch piece of floral wire on top of the bottom portion of the rosebud. Fold the angled end piece over the wire toward the left of the ribbon. Tightly wrap the top of the wire and the bottom of the bud with floral tape. If you are stitching the rose, do not use the wire. Stitch through the bottom of the rose with three or four tiny stitches in the front and out the back, returning through the back to the front.

  6. Step 6

Fold the ribbon at an angle and twist it while turning the rosebud. A wavy petal will begin to form on the left side. Secure the bottom of the petal by contining to wrap it with floral tape or by inserting the needle and adding a few gathering stitches at the bottom of the ribbon piece. Continue twisting and securing the ribbon until the rose is the correct size for your project. Firmly secure the rose bottom with floral tape or needle and thread. Break off the thread or the tape.

  7. Step 7

    Shape the petals by hand.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can add a silk or satin leaf to the rose with floral tape or needle and thread.
