How to Make a Hanging Bird Bath
A hanging bird bath is a unique design element that adds interest to any garden and provides a water source for wild birds. A hanging bird bath is a good choice for small gardens and yards that are frequented by cats. A hanging bird bath can easily be made with a few items and a small time investment.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic flower pot drip saucer
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters
- Needle nose pliers
- Drill and drill bit (1/16 inch)
- Fine sand paper

Clean the bird bath saucer. Thoroughly wash the saucer with soap and water before using. Rinse well and allow to air dry.

Drill holes in the bird bath saucer. Use the drill and drill bit to drill three evenly spaced holes around the rim of the saucer. Use the sand paper to lightly sand around the holes to remove any sharp edges or burrs.

Cut and attach the wire. Using the wire cutters, cut three pieces of floral wire to a length of 36 inches then insert each piece into a drilled hole in the saucer. Use the needle nose pliers to bend and twist each piece of wire back onto itself. Gather the three pieces at the top and twist them together approximately 16 to 18 inches above the saucer. Loop the twisted wire onto itself to create a hanger loop.

Hang the bird bath in your yard or garden using a plant hanger attached to a post or a shepherd's hook. Fill the bird bath with water then check and refill it often.

Tips & Warnings
This type of hanging bird bath can also be used for a feeder. Simply drill holes in the saucer to allow for drainage.
Use a shepherd's hook that is tall enough to keep visiting birds out of easy reach of roaming cats.
