New owners of the Sony Playstation Portable (or PSP) gaming system who are saving games, data, pictures and music on their Memory Stick might want to delete some files to conserve space, clear the clutter in the Memory Card or Memory Stick or make more space to further download media or data. The PSP can be a wonderful device if the Memory Stick is well maintained.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PSP Sony Memory Stick
  • USB cable (if necessary)
  • PSP
  1. Step 1

Format the Memory Stick for the PSP if you have not done so. Push the "Home" button on the bottom left-hand side on the front of the unit. At the main menu, scroll to the left of the screen and look for "Settings." Press the "X" button to pull up "System Settings" at the submenu. Then go down the list and find "Format Memory Stick." Confirm you want to format the memory stick and it will do so in a minute or so.

The PSP uses a firmware operating system to manage the various files such as mp3s, pictures, game data and actual games. Download the game of your choice from various sites by dowloading it to your PC and then to the PSP through a USB connection. The PSP needs to be off before connecting to the PC, after which you can turn the device on. Make sure the PSP is in USB connect mode by scrolling to the left and pressing "X" on the option. After saving the game, it is time to manage your new game in the device.

  3. Step 3

At the main menu, look for the Game icon where your downloaded games reside and press "X." The list scrolls up and down the list of games stored on the Memory Stick. Highlight the particular game and press the triangle button; a list will appear next to the game you want. Go down to the "Delete" command and press "X"; confirm that the game file will be removed by selecting "Yes."

  4. Step 4

Once the file is deleted, go back to the main menu and manage the other media within your Memory Stick inventory.

  5. Step 5

Keep up with regular updates for the firmware on the unit to avoid USB connection and other problems.
