Things You'll Need:
- additional return fittings
- additional pool piping
-
Step 1
For existing in ground pools you can replace the ball fitting in the adjustable water return connections. Make the opening nearest the pump the smallest available and farthest from the pump, the largest. By doing this more filtered water will be pushed out at the far end of the pool. Adjust these jets so that they move water toward any dead areas in the pool. You can also direct them upward to help push floating debris toward the skimmers.
-
Step 2
For above ground pools you will need to install extra return fittings equally around the pool. Figure one half horsepower per jet maximum. A 2 HP pump would have 4 return jets. You'll need to install TEE connections as you loop around the pool with your new return lines to tie into the new return jet locations. Make the loop continuous...making the return filtered water exit the pump and able to go either left or right around the pool.
-
Step 3
Sometimes pool pump with bronze impellers experience reduced pressure and are hard to prime. The bronze impellers wear down are are less able to move water. Replace the impeller with a new one. Be sure to get the correct number of impeller vanes because the impeller design varies with horsepower. This service will bring your pump back to new performance.

Step 4
You can also up the horsepower by 1/2 if things are still a little sluggish. From a 1 hp go to a 1.5hp...and so on. If you do this clean your filter and take note of the NEW CLEAN filter pressure starting out...as it will change and most likely be higher.
