How to Avoid an Out of Memory Error

The computer's physical and virtual memory are vital system resources providing stability and quickly processing vast amounts of calculations when working properly. As software has evolved, programs have begun to consume more and more of these resources. Increasing physical memory does not always solve the problem. Proper management of virtual memory is required to avoid Out of Memory errors and other system problems.

Managing your virtual memory

1. Click the Control Panel button under the Settings tab of your Start Menu.

2. Double-click on System and choose the Advanced Tab.

3. Choose the Settings button under the Performance option. This will bring up your Performance Options.

4. Click the Advanced Tab. From here you can Change your virtual Memory settings.

5. Choose the custom option and enter your new virtual memory settings. The standard rule of thumb is that your minimum should be equal to your physical memory and your maximum should be 150% of physical memory.

6. Click Apply. You should now experience fewer memory errors and related issues.

Tips & Warnings

• When increasing virtual memory no longer prevents errors, it is time to adjust your physical memory as well. Remember to update your virtual settings if you upgrade your computer's RAM.
