Wrap a Bouquet of Roses

A beautifully wrapped bouquet of roses is the perfect accent for a bride on her special day. Because of rising costs, many couples are making their own wedding bouquets for the bride and the bridesmaids. An attractive bouquet can be a fun project for the wedding party in the days preceding the ceremony. The more people involved the quicker the process will be. The roses should be as fresh as possible if they have to be stored for any length of time. Additional greenery and other flowers can be added just before the final step of wrapping.

Things You'll Need

  • 12 to 36 long-stemmed fresh roses
  • Sharp utility scissors.
  • Floral wire
  • Rubber bands or green florist tape, available at craft supply stores.
  • 2 to 3 yards of 1- to 3-inch wide ribbon (plus up to 3 feet extra for a bow)
  • Lace fabric or colored florist paper
  • Clear tape (if using paper)
  • A 1 quart container or vase, up to 6 inches in diameter.
  • Spray bottle filled with cool water.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove leaves and thorns from the roses with scissors.

    • 2

Select only three blooms to be the center focal point of the bouquet. Arrange the other blooms around the outer edges, making sure that the center flowers are a bit higher than the surrounding blooms. Continue until you have a dome shape and the bouquet reaches the desired diameter.

    • 3

Wrap floral wire around the center of the bundle while grasping the roses firmly in one hand. Wrap one rubber band around the bouquet just above the floral wire and another rubber band below the wire, but above where you want the base of the bouquet to be.

    • 4

Use the scissors to trim the stems evenly just below the bottom rubber band. Place the freshly cut ends beneath cold running water for 60 seconds.

    • 5

Wind ribbon, lace fabric or floral paper snugly around the stems. Make sure that the base of the bouquet is hidden and that the wire and rubber bands are completely concealed. Secure with clear tape if using paper. Use a pin to fasten the fabric. If you have opted to wrap the bouquet in ribbon, you may tie a knot and conceal the ends within the bouquet or use extra ribbon to make a bow to tie around it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the bouquet will be needed the following day, skip the final step and place the cut ends of the bouquet in 3 inches of cool water in a container. Place the container in a refrigerator. Wrap the bouquet as in Step 5 three hours before it will be needed. While waiting, mist the blooms lightly once every hour with cool water from a spray bottle.
