Wedding announcements are very detailed. You don't want to leave anything out. Here are a few guidelines to go by when writing your newspaper wedding announcement.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the writing style and details that are normally included in wedding announcements. Read some that have been already been published in the newspaper(s) that you will be sending the announcement to.

  2. Step 2

The first part is the introduction. You want to tell them who, when, and where. It is very common for the families of the couple to submit the wedding announcement to the newspapers. For example:

"Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stevens of Hometown,Ny are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, Samantha to Thomas Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Allen of New Town, Ny. The wedding was held at First Baptist Church in New Town, Ny on Saturday, September 21, 2009, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The reception followed at Who's Who Country Club."

The couple may also choose to send the announcement themselves.

"Miss Samantha Anne Stevens and Mr. Thomas John Allen were united in marriage on Saturday, September 21, 2009, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the First Baptist Church in New Town, Ny. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stevens of Hometown,Ny. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Allen of New Town, Ny. The reception followed at Who's Who Country Club."

  3. Step 3

Now it starts to get more detailed. Here is a list of things that are typically included in a wedding announcement. You may have to add or omit some of the following depending on newspaper policy and word restraints.

You will want to list who officiated the ceremony and who gave away or presented the bride.

    Introduce the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Be sure to specify the maid of honor and best man.

A lot of announcements will describe what the bride, groom, and wedding party wore.

If there were live musicians, it is polite to list their names with what instrument they played.

Sometimes particulars about the venue decorations are mentioned.

  4. Step 4

    Include some biographical information.

"The bride is a graduate of Hometown High School. She received her Associates in Medical Assisting at New Town University. She is a Medical Assistant in Everywhere County.
The groom is a graduate of New Town High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from New Town University. He is a Social Worker in Everywhere County.
Following the honeymoon in Destin, Fl, the couple will reside in New Town, Ny."

  5. Step 5

Include a wedding photograph of the couple. On the back of the photo put the couple's names and date of the wedding. If you wish to have the photo returned, include a stamped and self-addressed envelope.

  6. Step 6

Tell the newspaper the date you would like the announcement to be ran. Give them a contact phone number or e-mail address in case they need for information.

  7. Step 7

Some couples choose to include their personal contact information in the announcement. Discuss if this is a good idea or not with the newspaper.

  8. Step 8

Check the paper for you announcement!! Congratulations on the wedding!

Tips & Warnings
  • Check with the newspaper before you start writing. They may have some guidelines of their own that they need you to follow before submission. Some newspapers may even want to write the announcement themselves.
  • You want to submit your wedding announcement to the newspaper(s) as soon after the wedding as possible. But "soon" means, as soon as you get a wedding photo back from your photographer of you as a couple. This can take a few months.
  • Don't forget out of town newspapers. You may want to send one to the town you went to college in or have family at as well.

on 11/17/2009 Another great source for creating engagement announcements is www.Amigram.com. People appreciate the opportunity to share their good news without having to let all their relatives and parents’ friends onto their Facebook page, pay for a newspaper listing, or create a website.

Of course, they can also send their announcement to Facebook and Twitter, if they want to spread the news; or if they want to keep their announcement private, they can restrict it so only friends and family see it.
