Everyone loves a puppy, but no one likes a puppy who isn't bladder shy. Housebreaking a dog is a task that takes time and patience, it is a key component of integrating your new friend into your everyday life. Some dogs are quicker to catch on than others, but patience is truly the key. If you put the time and effort into training your pet, then you will have a better relationship with your new companion.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • House Training Pads (Can be bought from any pet supplies store)
  • Treats (for good puppies)
  1. Step 1

Place the pad in an easily accessible area that your puppy frequents, make sure your puppy is aware of its location.

  2. Step 2

Place your puppy on the pad and give him some encouragement to go to the bathroom, this will not work at first but will serve as a starting point.

  3. Step 3

If you catch the puppy in mid act of relieving himself elsewhere, make sure to let him now what he did was wrong and redirect him to his puppy pad.

  4. Step 4

Dogs learn by association, so they more you enforce the pad, the more he will realize that is unacceptable to go to the bathroom elsewhere. When they get it right and go to the bathroom on the pad, make sure you praise them highly and offer them a treat.

  5. Step 5

After allot of patience and consistently enforcing the pad on the dog, the dog should start to realize that going on the pad earns them praise and a treat, while going elsewhere ends in a scolding.

  6. Step 6

After allot of patience and training, your puppy will accept his new role as a member of your household. He will learn by association and fall into a routine of continue going on the pads.

Tips & Warnings
  • make sure you praise your dog when ever he does something write, don't let him come to fear you and know you as the person who scolds them. Just like a child, some stern parenting is needed, but praise also goes a long way.
  • Pad training is a good method to house break your dog, but is only a smart choice for small dogs and puppies. Larger breeds will have to graduate to going to the bathroom outside at some point.
