Things You'll Need:
- Pool
-
Step 1
Remember that oxygen floats to the surface. As long as you inhale before you start swimming and keep it inside of you, you WILL float to the surface. Begin by training in shallow water so that you can stand if you or the person has problems.
-
Step 2
Have someone guide you while you swim in a straight line while holding your breath. Holding your breath will keep you at the surface. Kick your legs and practice this before you try to incorperate your arms. The person guiding you can put one hand under you and one hand on top of your lower back, just to make them feel safe and get the feeling down.
-
Step 3
To incorperate your arms, and perform something like the freestyle stroke, there are many small things to think about. Start out by lowering your head so that your face is facing the bottom of the pool and kicking yourself off the wall, as if you were jumping horizontally. Bring one arm up out of the water and rotate the opposite side of your body just like a plane would when they turn into the water.
-
Step 4
Bring your arm that you lifted out of the water forward and rotate the side of your body that you lifted back down, as if you were a plane and you were going to turn in the opposite direction. As you turn this side down, you should be ready to repeat the process on the opposite side of your body to match what you just did. Be sure to kick your feet while you perform this.
-
Step 5
Unless you're coming up to take in air, the turning of your body should be very small. To take air, just turn more so that you give room for your head to poke up and take in some oxygen.
