So you want to write a book or better yet a series of books? This tutorial will tell you the steps needed to complete your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Writing a book begins with an idea. Identify the theme and topic for your book. Determine whether you want to write fiction or nonfiction. Decide the market for your book.

Consider whether you are writing a niche book or a book with mass market. In either case, determine whether your idea is best served as a stand alone work or is better written in series.

    • 2

Once you have developed your idea and identified your target audience, write an outline for your book. The outline should include a solid introduction, a strong conclusion and each chapter of your book. Keep your target audience in mind as you write your outline.

    • 3

Write your book a chapter or portion at a time. Writing 400 pages can seem overwhelming, but if you break the book down to 20 chapters of 20 pages each, then the task is more manageable.

    • 4

Make a schedule to complete your work. Set out how many pages you expect to write each day and how much time you expect to research. Allow for set backs, but keep to your schedule. If the schedule you set is overly aggressive, set a new schedule that works for you and keep to it.

    • 5

Keep your audience in mind as you write and edit your work. The tone of a beginner book will be quite different than the tone for an advanced audience. Similarly, the tone for a professional audience, such as lawyers or doctors, will be quite different than the prose for a mass market book.

    • 6

Keep writing. If your goal is to write only two pages a day, then you can finish your book in less than a year even with days off and wasted words.

    • 7

Once you are done your first book, begin the process again and develop a series of books.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write everyday.

  • Do not get frustrated.

  • Edit, but do not let editing interfere with writing new pages every day.
