Choosing the right template is critical for the success of your PowerPoint presentation. Templates can look professional, bright and spontaneous, or a complex combination of the two—but if you choose the wrong template you can irritate your audience, or make your text difficult to read. With so many different templates to choose from, here is a short guide that will help you pick the one that is right for your PowerPoint presentation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you need to open up Microsoft PowerPoint and find the menu with templates to choose from. Pull up the format (or design) menu, and select apply design template. Now you just need to click one to apply to your slides. If you don't like any of the options you see, you can also go online to Microsoft's website and download more.

  2. Step 2

Before you choose a template though, carefully consider the purpose of your PowerPoint. Are you planning to pitch an idea to a small business? If you are going to present in a business environment it’s best to select something simple and professional. Pick a strong color (Generally white, black, or dark blue work best). Make sure your template flows well with your presentation—if you are discussing business plans a neon green background would be a poor choice.

  3. Step 3

If you plan to present to your family or the local community you might have different plans in mind. Bright colored backgrounds will lighten the mood and make your presentation more vibrant and interesting. Evaluate your audience carefully to determine what they will be expecting.
