How to Wash Hair Color Out With Shampoo

If you've ever had one of those "Oh no, what have I done moments" after experimenting with hair color, here's the at home solution. The first step is not to panic. It usually takes 24-48 hours for hair color to completely set. This is why most home hair color kits recommend not washing your hair for one to two days after getting a new color. This means that if you act quickly, you can remove a lot of the color before it becomes permanent.

Things You'll Need

• Cheap shampoo (Prell if you can find it)
• Vinegar
• Deep conditioning treatment

Instructions

1. Assess the damage. If your hair is too dark or too red, you can soften or fade the hair color with a few easy steps.

2. Shampoo with the cheapest harshest shampoo you can find. Most cheap shampoos contain strong detergents that will help deteriorate the color. Lather hair up and let the shampoo soak in for at least five minutes. Repeat if necessary.

3. If you still have too much color, try mixing your shampoo with vinegar in equal parts and rewash hair. The vinegar contains natural acids that will help dissolve the hair color.

4. After you have rinsed your hair thoroughly, apply a deep conditioning treatment and leave it in your hair. If possible, leave the conditioning treatment in overnight. The conditioner will help soften your hair after the harsh scrubbing and will also help keep any residual hair color from sinking into the hair shaft.

5. Wash out the conditioner and then shampoo your hair with your normal shampoo and style as usual. By this time your hair color should have faded significantly.

Tips & Warnings

• If you don't have cheap shampoo on hand, you can use dish washing liquid.

• Mayonnaise is a good substitute for a deep conditioning treatment and will have the same effect.

• Don't recolor your hair for at least a week to minimize permanent damage to your hair.

• If you have lightened your hair, you cannot shampoo out the color.
