Lobster may be an exotic taste treat for people living inland, but in addition to their succulent flavor, lobster is also a healthy dinner choice. This delicious crustacean is low-fat, low cholesterol, AND low-calorie. Eating lobster provides the body with many required vitamins and minerals, including the heart-protecting Omega 3 fatty-acids. As with any seafood, however, safe preparation, starting with the process of thawing, is essential to gain all the taste and health benefits that lobster offers. Follow these steps to thaw your lobster, then once cooked, enjoy the decadent feeling of indulging yourself - it's good for you!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lobster
  • Refrigerator
  • Sink
  • Plastic Wrap or plastic bag
  • Colander or slotted bowl
  • Dish or pan
  • Water
  1. Step 1

The safest and best way to thaw lobster is in your refrigerator overnight. Lobster should be placed in a plastic bag or wrapped in plastic wrap prior to placing in the refrigerator, to prevent its odor from invading other food. Place wrapped lobster in colander or other slotted bowl. Place the colander on a plate or in a shallow pan to catch the water. Depending on the amount of lobster you are thawing, this process could take 8 to 24 hours. Leave the lobster in the refrigerator until time to cook it.

  2. Step 2

When time is too short for refrigerator thawing, lobster can also be thawed using water in the kitchen sink. This method however, will add water to the lobster meat and potentially make it mushy when cooking. Be sure to clean the sink thoroughly with a cleanser containing bleach to avoid any transmission of food poisoning. Once again place the lobster in a plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap, and place in colander. Put the colander in the sink and turn on the cold water tap. Allow the water to run over the lobster until thawed. This method of thawing lobster can take 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Allow the lobster to drain as much as possible before cooking. Lobster should be cooked as soon as possible once thawed.

  3. Step 3

Lobster can be also be thawed on your kitchen counter. As with the other steps, place lobster in a plastic bag, place in colander, then place the colander on plate or shallow pan. This method takes one to three hours, and the lobster should be cooked as soon as possible after thawing.

  4. Step 4

Once thawed, cook the lobster and enjoy your healthy and tasty seafood feast!
