Step 1
Only use a chainsaw if you're in good physical condition, and always wear safety gear. This includes gloves for enhanced grip, a hard-hat, safety glasses, earplugs, and boots with effective tread. Never wear loose clothing when you handle a chainsaw.
-
Step 2
Start the chainsaw at least 30 feet away from contained fuel, or sparks could ignite a fire. Also make sure there aren't children nearby. When you're ready to pull the started cord, set the chainsaw on the ground and hold it in place with your foot.
-
Step 3
Draw the starter cord straight up. Pulling at an angle will cause the cord to rub against the starter housing and break. The chain should not be touching anything when you start the machine. Once you turn it on, only cut at a height below your shoulders.
-
Step 4
Hold the machine with both hands. Your dominant one should be placed farthest back for superior grip. If you need to carry the chainsaw, be sure to turn it off while you walk. Finally, always keep an extra chain handy in case yours breaks.
