This idea is a very old idea that I have seen all around my home state of Arkansas. It is a excellent way to recycle and reuse the old tires that you might have in your garage that are leftovers. Why not get the tires inverted then use them in your garden? It is not that difficult to do and it can add a touch of whimsy to any kids garden.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Used inverted tire
  • Hacksaw or jigsaw
  • Outdoor paints in a variety of colors
  • Your imagination
  1. Step 1
    Many shapes and styles!
    Many shapes and styles!

The most difficult thing about this project is that you need to have your tire inverted. I have never been able to do this on my own so I have always had my Father take it to the tire service station to have it done for me. That is what I would suggest you to do as well because it is worth the fee to have it done!

  2. Step 2
    Great insulator for plants!

Once the tire is inverted, it is time to design the edging on how you would like it. There are many styles: scalloped, petaled, free form and the ever famous plain edge. Whatever you decide make sure that it reflects your personal style. To make the one that is at the very top that is petaled, all you need is a white crayon, the ability to draw and a jigsaw.

  3. Step 3

Draw out the petals on the edge of the inverted tire then cut. Once you have finished cutting the petals out it is time to paint the tire. Use outdoor paint so that it will not peel and flake off the tire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try stacking the tires and filling them with draining materials and potting soil top off the stacked tires with the petaled inverted tire for a touch of whimsy.
  • Keep all sharp tools away from small kids.

on 8/1/2009 This is an awesome way to reuse old tires! Love it! Never knew you could get them inverted! Most places charge a fee to dispose of them now. Instead, might as well pay the fee to get them inverted and them make something cool like this with them. Thanks for the great idea!
