How to Create an IT Resume

Your IT (Information Technology) resume will be the first opportunity to make a lasting impression with the employer and your ability to make a great impression is contingent upon the technical skills and experience you include in your IT resume. Information technologists customize and create websites, maintain and build databases and a host of other computer related duties. To create an IT resume use the steps below.

  • Word Processor
  • Keywords
  • Relevant experience
  • Technical skills
  1. Step 1

    List your employment objective; the reason you are creating the IT resume and the job you are seeking.
    See example below:
    Objective: Experienced Project Manager seeking a full-time position as IT management.

  2. Step 2

    List the keywords used in the job description in your IT resume, for example, if the job description is seeking a software manager who is knowledgeable in CISC or VSAM and Networks, such as Novell you would highlight those qualifications on your resume. Basically, you want to highlight all relevant technical skills and software expertise on the first portion of your IT resume immediately following your name, contact telephone number, email address and residential address.
    See example below:
    Networks: Novell
    Operating Systems: VSE/ESA, OS/400, Windows NT/98/2000, Vista
    Software: VSAM, CISC, ICCF
    Platform: IBM 370/390, AS/400

  3. Step 3

    List your professional experience beginning with the more recent employer. Be sure the IT resume includes duties that you performed that are relevant to the job description you are applying for.
    See example below:
    Information Tech USA INC, Atlanta, GA 2000-Present
    Project Manager
    Developed and implemented employee software manuals. Assisted Information Tech USA Inc, CEO in the project planning, budget guidelines and forecasting.

  4. Step 4

    List all of your accomplishments in your position listed on your IT resume; this is the time you may choose to use the italics for the word "accomplishments" this will draw attention to your accomplishments.
    See the example below:
    Accomplishments
    o Trained and coordinated a staff of 25 employees in a $5 million dollar software project.
    o Converted BAL, COBOL code over 33,000 lines in a timely and cost effective manner.
    o Oversaw programmer and analyst for a leading pharmaceutical company.
    o Completed projects prior to deadline.

  5. Step 5

    Don't be intimidated by words used in the job description, if you are skilled and posses the expertise there is no need to be intimidated by anyone. Create a quality IT resume and it will get the job done for you.
