Not as hard as you may think!

These come in so handy when making sauces, soups or other recipes that require the thickening of liquid but just like other kitchen appliances, can be tricky to clean. This method can be used with the shaker-style (top) or crank-handle flour sifters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Hot water(at least 1 cup)
  • Dishcloth
  • 2-3 paper towel sheets (or napkins)
  • Large, deep bowl or dishwater sink
  1. Step 1

Remove all detachable pieces and carefully shake out excess flour on one paper towel sheet before disposing.

  2. Step 2

Lightly moisten another paper towel sheet to carefully wipe insides.

  3. Step 3

Fill sink or large bowl with hot (not boiling) water and dishwashing liquid.

  4. Step 4

Depending on the size of sifter, make sure that water is deep enough to cover in it entirely.

  5. Step 5

Add all pieces to water, making sure they are covered and let sit for 15-30 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Rinse all of the pieces in hot water to ensure that all flour has been removed.

  7. Step 7

Using either your remaining paper towels or a dry dish cloth, lay on a flat surface and place sifter parts sideways so that openings may be exposed to air.

  8. Step 8

Let dry overnight or shake out excess moisture after 30 minutes of drying and place in a different position that allows air to got through. Re-assemble pieces after it has completely dried.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can reduce drying time by wiping with dry dishcloth after it has soaked but it's important to let air dry for at least 2 hours afterward.
  • If you are not certain about re-assembly, you can use toothpicks to clean areas that are not easy to reach.
  • If using an electric sifter, please read manufacturers' instructions for cleaning.
