Things You'll Need:
- APA Manual
-
Step 1
Buy, rent or borrow an APA Manual. Both the APA and MLA manuals tend to update frequently. If you're using an older manual it's a good idea to upgrade to the latest version. If you can't afford to buy a new book then take yours and go to the library or borrow a friend's APA manual to check the differences between books. Many times the changes in the manual will be rearrangement of chapters and not necessarily some radical change to the way that APA style of writing and citing need to be done.
-
Step 2
Type "References" at the top of the page, but do not put the quotation marks around it. Make sure it is centered and in the same font as your paper without being typed in bold or any other fanciness. APA style calls it a reference page instead of a works cited page.
-
Step 3
Double space the whole reference page. You need only double space one time after writing references for your title. Make sure that you have 1 inch margins all around. In APA Style list the author first followed by a comma then the author's initial. Here's an example: Smith, J.
Following the initial should be a period then you list the year of publication in parenthesis followed by a period like this (2009). Write the title of the book followed by the edition in parenthesis ending with a period. The last two things are the place of printing with a colon then the publisher followed by a period. For the APA Style if you need to have a second line then you will need to indent it five spaces. -
Step 4
The APA Style reference page should look something like this:
Last name, initial. (Year). Book. (Edition). Location: Publisher.
