Blue stains are some of the most dreaded stains on clothing and other fabrics. Blueberries, grape juice and powdered drink mixes are just a few of the culprits. The enzymes that make things stain blue can be difficult to get out of fabric, and regular washing will just set the stain permanently. You can remove blue stains and save most clothing by acting quickly and using the right method to remove the dye.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Fill a bowl with 1 quart of warm water and add 1 ounce of oxygenated bleach powder. Mix well. Oxygenated bleach is available where laundry detergent is sold.

  2. Step 2

Place the clothing in the bleach solution and allow it to soak for 1 to 2 hours. Remove the item and rinse it with clean water.

  3. Step 3

Pour hydrogen peroxide directly onto any leftover stain until it is completely covered. Blot up the peroxide with an old towel that you don't mind the stain transferring to.

  4. Step 4

Wash the item as normal. Before drying, check for any blue stain that wasn't completely removed. Clean the clothing again with the bleach powder and peroxide before drying, as drying will set the stain permanently.

Tips & Warnings
  • The same method can be used to clean carpet and upholstery, except you will blot up the cleaner instead of rinsing it out. Items with blue dye will sometimes leave a purplish stain. Clean the item the same way as you would a straight blue stain. Oxygenated bleach is non-toxic and rarely harms fabric.
  • Always test stain removers on a hidden area of the fabric to make sure they don't bleach the color.
