How to Overcome HOCD

Homosexual obsessive-compulsive disorder (HOCD) is not a common term but has gained momentum in recent years. HOCD refers to the anxiety or doubt some individuals feel about their sexuality. HOCD sufferers are constantly worried that they might be gay, but are never able to resolve this internal issue. This is different than anxiety commonly experienced by gays in dealing with society's acceptance or lack thereof, rather HOCD implies internal confusion and fear about an individual's own sexual orientation.

Visit your doctor and ask if medication will help. Your doctor may choose to prescribe a medication such as Prozac, Luvox or Zoloft to relieve you of your anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Though these medications can't rid an individual of HOCD, they can help you function more easily.

Consider cognitive-behavioral therapy. A therapist can help you work out your cognitive issues and get a handle on your anxious thoughts. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the preferred psychotherapy for obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Try hypnosis to relieve anxiety. Make an appointment with a hypnotist that has experience with obsessive-compulsive disorders. There are even self-help hypnosis audios available online that may help you alleviate your anxieties.
