Step 1
The first step is to look at all of the foods in the buffet prior to putting food on your plate. This will minimize the risk of overeating because you had a full plate of food and then saw something that you had to have. Additionally it allows you the intelligently choose which items you want and are healthiest.
-
Step 2
Next make sure to sit at a booth instead of a table. This makes it tougher to get in and out and thus makes you less likely to get more food.
-
Step 3
Now make sure to sit so that you are not facing the buffet. This will prevent you from staring at food after you are full and being tempted to go back. Additionally you will not see people eating more than you and be able to convince yourself that one more bite won't be a big deal.
-
Step 4
Now make a conscientious effort to chew eat bite of food thoroughly before swallowing. This will result in you eating slower than everyone else at the table. This will minimize your chance of overeating because you don't want to sit without eating while everyone else is eating.
-
Step 5
Be willing to leave leftovers. Tell yourself before you go and throughout the meal that you can leave leftovers. Don't force yourself to consume extra calories just because you do not want to leave leftovers.

on 11/23/2009 you're a great coach. When we go to Chinese buffet, I get carried away, but I only get the crab legs and kim chee...stuff I never get at home.

on 7/10/2009 Two trips to the buffet table is my rule. If I find myself wanting more food, I eat a big dessert and call it a day...thanks for sharing a great article.
