How to Troubleshoot Creative Labs Speakers

Creative Labs makes a variety of different speakers for home entertainment systems, MP3 players and computers. While speakers are made up of many components, any of which can possibly fail, Creative Labs' speakers have some common issues. If you are having trouble with your Creative Labs speaker system, the system doesn't necessarily need replacing. There are a few things that can be easily fixed.

  1. The Steps

    • 1

Check your speakers with another device if you are hearing no sound or have poor sound quality. The speakers are not always the problem. It is possible you've had a sound card fail in your computer or the wiring in your television has gone bad.

    • 2

Move the cables connecting your speaker to a device away from AC adapters, computer monitors, TV screens and MP3 chargers if you are hearing a buzzing sound or static. All of these objects have powerful magnetic fields and will interfere with speaker sound.

    • 3

Double-check all of the connections. If you are getting sound out of most of your speakers, but only one or two seem to be failing, it is very likely the cords just came loose. Check the connection to both the speaker itself and the device. If your speaker has a "Test" button, you can also use this to test the individual speaker.

    • 4

Add a ground loop isolator if you hear a hissing noise or hum through the speakers when there is no sound coming out. This hiss or hum comes from the wiring in your apartment or home, not the speakers themselves, but can be corrected by adding an isolator to the system.

    • 5

Switch out the power outlet or cable if you are getting no power to your subwoofer. If another electrical outlet doesn't fix the problem, borrow the power cord from your PC to test out with the subwoofer. If the subwoofer works with the computer cable, you will know you just have a bad cable. If it doesn't, you can replace the subwoofer fuse. The fuse in Creative Labs subs is under the power port. To replace, remove the plug and use a screwdriver to pry out the fuse box. It can be replaced with a standard 2.5 amp fuse. If changing the fuse doesn't fix the issue, you've got a bad sub.
